Proposal # 1

For my first project I would like to explore how a person’s appearance can change, form, and distort the way they are perceived. Appearances are the first thing that other people see of one another and judgments are often made based on these impressions. I am interested in creating different looks in order to see what different appearances say about someone. In order to explore the differences that varying external appearances have, I will be taking portraits of one person for this study (most likely of myself). To portray the theme of appearance and perception I plan to create different characters in order to look into what a person’s appearance says about them to the rest of the world. To execute these photographs I will be using a tripod and shooting in my home and around my neighborhood depending on what location is the most fitting for the character or look I am shooting.
The first artist that is influencing me for this project is Cindy Sherman. Sherman is an influence for this project because of her work in self-portraits and her ability to drastically change her appearance. Sherman’s ability to change her look exemplifies what I aim to do for this project. Her photographs show how changes in appearance and location can have an effect on the perception of another person. For example Sherman’s appearance in “Untitled #465” is drastically different from how she looks in “Untitled Film Still #92.” However, the change in appearance and location in each of these photographs are not the only things that influence the perception of the subjects; the emotions conveyed also play a part. While the older woman in #465 looks proud, almost arrogant, the woman in #92 looks frightened. This ability to convey emotion is something I hope to capture through my work in this project.
The second artist that is influencing me is Arnold Newman, also because of his ability to capture the emotions and personality of his subjects. Many of Newman’s portraits are closely framed on the subject’s face. Through these intimate compositions, Newman captures the emotions and personalities of the subjects in the simplest way. For example, his portrait of the photographer Bill Brandt captures a quiet thoughtfulness through the gesture he makes as well as the look in his eyes. Overall, I hope to combine influence from Sherman’s narrative ability and Newman’s ability to capture emotion in order to create meaningful compositions on the perceptions that appearance creates.
